Co-author of Texas Lawyer’s Creed dies

James “Blackie” Holmes III, a co-author of the Texas Lawyer’s Creed, has died in Dallas.  In 1989, Justice Eugene Cook of the Texas Supreme Court enlisted Holmes and Houston attorney Fred Hagans to co-chair a committee to address incivility and “Rambo” litigation tactics by lawyers in Texas.  The Supreme Court and the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals issued the Creed on November 7, 1989, the same month that the Texas Center for Legal Ethics was founded by former Chief Justices Robert Calvert, Joe Greenhill, and Jack Pope.
